VIZIANAGARAM.

A warm welcome to SEDB, Vizianagaram and to our Institutions!! We are proud to introduce our children as champions in the class room, in athletics, Dance, Drawing, and Marshall Arts. Our Organization is well recognized and celebrating the 25 years of service to the physically challenged children.

Sri Mahajan Rai Sahib Perla Ramurty Chetty School for the Deaf [SMRPRC SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF] is to celebrate its Silver Jubilee in 2009-10. It has a rich diverse history. It can be noted how the agony of a father helped to change the lives of hearing not only in and around Vizianagaram, but also from far off places. About 24 years ago, the plight of Mr T.Ravi a hearing impaired child so touched the heart of his father Sri T.Satyanarayna, and a dream emerged out of the situation. It all began in a humble way. The father had to roam around various places to get his deaf child admitted in to a good school but unfortunately failed in all his efforts. With a little bit of frustration he approached me with a request to start a school for the deaf in Vizianagaram. We both have approached the District Collector, Vizianagaram with an appeal to open a Government school for the deaf at the District Head quarters and was unsuccessful with the same. It made both of our minds to start a Society. With out any delay, we have registered the same on 6-August-1984.

On the same day the school for the deaf with 16 children was started in a small room which was rented. We have admitted Mr T.Ravi, as the 1st student, who is the deaf child of Sri. Satyanarayana.

Sri H.P.Chowdary, a businessman, Shri Perla Setheyya Chetty, a local philanthropist and a host of good elite of the town joined us and extended their support to the project.

Today we have 217 children from 1st standard to 10th class, imparting the most comprehensive education and service to individuals with hearing loss and also to 60 mentally challenged children with vocational base in various fields.

In the year 1992, the great philanthropist of Vizianagaram Town Shri Perla Setheyya chetty donated a big building complex to the school. To thank him, we have named the after his father Shri Mahajan Raisahib Perla Ramurty Chetty’s name.

However, the school has severe financial crisis in the same year. A SWISS Agency REHASWISS came forward to extend its helping hand to run the institutions. Later, the School for the deaf secured Grant in aid from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. But the Vikas School for the MR and some of the Vocational units are being financed by REHASWISS.

How did this enduring legacy evolve surviving years of unparalleled growth, financial hurdles and other strains? There are common bonds passed from year after year. A clear vision for the future, a strong leadership, successful role models, positive attitude and above all an unending passion for service, made all this impossibility a possibility. For the existence of this Society, the children of silence would have been deprived of the charms and improvement of social life and interface. The gleeful rhymes of childhood echo not in their ears and in the imprisoned minds. The thunder’s voice awakes no echo in their ears; yet, these minds are not hopelessly paralyzed forever thanks to our efforts.

The great object of our Institutions is to affect a transformation in the lives of these children of silence and we do appeal to every philanthropic heart to help us in our sacred mission. We have given a hope and we are confident that everybody will take this opportunity to show that these mute children can do anything like anybody else. They can compete in this world and definitely contribute their mite to the nation like any other normal children without becoming burden on the Society.

Thanks and we welcome your suggestions/comments!!
